About The Lecturer
The Honorable Christine Van Aken is currently a SF Superior Court judge and serves as the Law and Motion/Discovery judge in Department 301. Judge Van Aken was appointed to the bench in 2018. Judge Van Aken earned a B.A. from Harvard and her law degree from NYU School of Law. After law school, she clerked for the Hon. Pierre N. Level of the United State Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, then joined the Arnold & Porter firm, and went on to clerk for the Hon. David Souter of the United States Supreme Court. Judge Van Aken joined the Office ofthe City Attorney of San Francisco in 2006 as a Deputy City Attorney and became Chief of Appellate Litigation in 2012. Her notable cases include defending San Francisco gun control ordinances from Second Amendment challenges and representing the City in its federal constitutional challenge to California’s ban on same-sex marriage.
